MEDICAL MALPRACTICE SECTION:  Society of Actuaries Study Finds Medical Errors Annually Cost at Least $19.5 Billion Nationwide.  "Findings from a new study released today estimate that measurable medical errors cost the U.S. economy $19.5 billion  in 2008. Commissioned by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and completed by consultants with Milliman, Inc., the report used claims data to provide an actuarially sound measurement of costs for avoidable medical injuries. Of the approximately $80 billion in costs associated with medical injuries, around 25 percent were the result of avoidable medical errors."  Access release or Full report.

ENVIRONMENTAL SECTION:  AAJ  Report: Decades of Environmental Disasters Show Role of Civil Justice System in Holding Polluters, July 2010.  The report examines how laws passed in the 1960s and 1970s were supposed to protect the environment, but lax enforcement left corporations with little incentive to comply. Ultimately, trial attorneys were the ones who sought justice for communities destroyed by corporate polluters. Access Release or Full Report.

WORKPLACE SAFETY SECTION: The Center for Public Integrity: BP Accounts for Most "Willful" Violations Among Refineries, Regulator Says. Two refineries operated by BP account for 97 percent of all "egregious willful" citations issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration since June 2007, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis.  Access Interactive Map.
